Holistic Holiday
Self-Care

By: Joythi Maharaj

As summer unfolds with its long days and golden light, many of us yearn for a reprieve from the chaos of daily routines. Holidays aren't just about sun and sea; they're an invitation to exhale, realign, and tend to the parts of ourselves we often neglect. This season, step beyond the usual and explore a more holistic approach to self-care, one that nourishes not just your body, but your mind and spirit too.

Whether you're lounging poolside, escaping into nature, or simply enjoying a quieter home routine, this is your chance to reconnect with yourself. Here are some hands-on, soulful practices to infuse your summer with balance, clarity, and joy.

Morning Mindfulness: Begin with Intention

Replace your usual wake-up scroll with a ritual of presence. Just 10 minutes of morning mindfulness can set a grounding tone for your entire day, whether through breathwork, guided meditation, or simply sipping tea in stillness.

Tip: Try placing your phone on aeroplane mode overnight and begin your day with deep belly breathing and a gratitude check-in: “What am I thankful for this morning?”

Journalling: Your Summer Soul Companion

Journalling is one of the most accessible and healing tools for self-reflection. Use your downtime to explore your inner world through writing. Create a summer self-care journal with themed prompts like:

  • What does freedom feel like in my body?
  • What am I ready to release this season?
  • How can I cultivate more play in my life?
Pro tip: Write outdoors! Let the breeze and sun inspire more honest, heart-led words.

EFT Tapping: Clear Emotional Clutter

Summer holidays may stir old emotions surrounding family dynamics, travel stress, or lingering burnout. Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT Tapping) offers a simple way to calm the nervous system and shift limiting beliefs. Tap gently on acupressure points while speaking affirmations like:

  • “Even though I feel overwhelmed, I deeply love and accept myself.”
  • “I release the need to carry what isn’t mine.”
There are many free YouTube tutorials and apps to guide you through quick sessions, ideal for holiday mornings or wind-down evenings.

Movement as Medicine

You don’t need a gym or studio, just a desire to move. Try:

  • Barefoot beach walks to reset your energy.
  • Sun salutations at sunrise for clarity.
  • Spontaneous dances to your favourite playlist.
Allow your movement to be intuitive and joyful. The goal isn’t to sweat; it’s to reconnect.

Nature Rituals: Sacred Simplicity

Let nature be your co-therapist. Create small rituals like:

  • Collecting stones or shells that represent intentions.
  • Lighting a candle by the water and speaking your heart’s wishes.
  • Forest bathing and immersing yourself in the stillness of trees without distraction.
When we slow down and attune to the earth, we often find the answers we’ve been seeking.

The Art of Doing Nothing (And Not Feeling Guilty About It)

In our productivity-obsessed culture, rest can feel rebellious. But stillness is sacred. Give yourself full permission to:

  • Take guilt-free naps.
  • Watch clouds without checking the time.
  • Say no to over-planned holidays.
This is your permission slip to pause.

Summer Soul Circle (Even If It’s Just You)

Gather a few friends or loved ones for a simple self-care circle. Share intentions, pull oracle cards, meditate, or do breathwork together. If you're solo, light a candle, draw a card, and journal on its meaning. Community- or self-led ritual creates meaning.

Create a Sacred Travel Kit

Whether you’re journeying far or staying home, pack a few tools that nourish your spirit:

  • A small crystal or stone
  • A pocket journal
  • Essential oils (lavender, peppermint, or citrus for uplifting)
  • Herbal tea bags
  • Affirmation cards
Let your holiday be a sanctuary, not an escape.

Digital Detox & Sacred Silence

Between emails, notifications, and endless scrolling, our minds rarely get a break. Summer is a golden chance to disconnect from tech and reconnect with presence.

Designate screen-free mornings or entire weekends. Fill the space with silence, nature sounds, or soft music. In stillness, creativity flows, and healing begins.

Connect with Others (and Yourself)

While summer is great for socialising, it’s also a time to check in with your emotional landscape. Share a circle with friends, swap self-care tips, or hold space for one another. If you're solo, practise mirror affirmations: look into your eyes and say, “I see you. I’m listening. I’ve got you.”

Come Home to Yourself

Self-care doesn’t have to be elaborate. It’s about making space for stillness, for emotion, for joy. This summer, choose practices that honour all parts of you: the body that needs rest, the mind that craves clarity, and the soul that longs for lightness.

Because the most important journey you’ll take this holiday season is the one inward.
