Simple Shifts:
For Peace & Perspective
By: Tebogo ‘Proverb’ Thekisho
Some people love to sit and talk with their confidants, but then there are others, like me, who prefer solitude to self-soothe and rest. There is no one-size-fits-all, as we are all different, with different needs. One of my fitness friends likes to offload on a punching bag, as it helps him to decompress. He channels his energy in this way and wears himself out, which works like a charm for his physical health but also helps clear his mind.
I am not into meditation or yoga and the like, yet stillness is my weapon of choice. A moment of quiet every day, or even a solo drive, gives me the opportunity to check in with myself, where I’m at and how I am doing. I also use this time for positive self-talk, reaffirmation and celebrating the small wins, which often include just having a good day. I must mention that even though my children can drive me nuts, the amount of pleasure I get from them is limitless. Just listening to their conversations and stories about school and their lives sets a wonderful pause in my own life.
Another technique that really works wonders for me – when I can make it happen – is travel. There is something about a change of scenery that really clears up the clutter in my mind; I temporarily forget what’s troubling me, and when I revisit the issue later, I have a fresh perspective on it. I am certain it is the element of rest that allows for this clarity of mind. We associate our homes, offices and social circles with hustle and bustle, business, efficiency … Even when you are asleep, you are dissecting the day’s activities, going through the to-do list in your mind and planning the next day. But, on a short break or holiday, all you have to think about is what your next meal or activity is going to be, and this change of rhythm, pace and scenery is a stunning disruptor. Sometimes one cannot travel, so then I change up the sequence of my day, and this alone serves as a shake-up and positively influences how I think and feel.
Do not try to do it all alone – there is power in support. Seek it and give it in return. Clichés are called thus because they are true. Love is the answer – your love for others, love from others, and plenty of self-love.
Love yourself enough to unplug, disconnect and keep a safe distance from anything that compromises your mental health. Do more of what you love, with whom you love, where you are loved.
On my personal journey, I have come to appreciate how servicing and achieving your mental health spills over into all other aspects of your life. Everything is positively impacted, and you lead a significantly higher quality of life. You radiate more energy and attract positive experiences into your world. Work, relationships, energy, self-worth, family … all the cornerstones of a wholesome life stem from your state of being, your vibe, your aura, you. Mental health is not a destination – it is a journey, so enjoy the ride.
