The Intelligence

of the Body

By: Tammy Richmond

A Gentle Return to Regulation

Wellness is often approached as something to fix, stress to reduce, sleep to improve, energy to restore. What if the body is not something to correct, but something to listen to?

For many, there is a quiet sense of disconnection. Moving through the day on autopilot, holding tension without noticing, pushing through fatigue. Over time, this begins to feel normal.

The body is always communicating, often in subtle ways that are easy to overlook. You might notice it in small moments, holding your breath while reading an email, a tightness in the chest during a busy day, or restlessness when things finally slow down. These are not problems to solve, but signals to be understood.

"There is growing awareness of the role the nervous system plays in shaping daily experience."

It is constantly scanning for cues of safety or stress and adjusting the body accordingly. When a demand is perceived, the system shifts into activation, often referred to as fight or flight. When safety is present, it moves towards rest, repair, and recovery.

In an ideal world, we would move fluidly between these states. In reality, many people spend extended periods in low grade stress without realising it.

Learning to notice is often the simplest place to begin. Noticing the breath, the body, the subtle shifts that move through you during the day. Not trying to change anything at first, but allowing awareness to build without judgement.

Most people already know that slow, conscious breathing can support calm, and that shallow breathing can intensify stress, in part through its relationship with the nervous system and pathways such as the vagus nerve. Yet in the moments where it is needed most, that knowledge does not always translate.

Being told to take a deep breath when overwhelmed can feel almost impossible. In heightened states, the body is not ready to slow down. Forcing calm can sometimes increase tension rather than ease it.

This is where responsiveness becomes more important than technique. Rather than applying a single tool to every situation, regulation begins with a simple question: What does my body need right now?

"Sometimes the answer is a slower breath. Other times, the body needs to release energy first, through movement, through sound, through a shift in state, before it can begin to settle."

Learning to recognise your own patterns, your default ways of responding, creates space for something different to emerge. With time, the nervous system can begin to recognise safety again. Not only in stillness, but in ordinary moments, in small experiences of ease, in a sense of gratitude that is often overlooked.

And when activation does arise, as it inevitably will, it can be met with a different quality of attention. Not resistance, but compassion. Not urgency to fix, but curiosity around what support is needed afterwards, and what helps the body return.

This is where choice begins to open. A growing awareness of what supports you, what your system responds to, and what feels accessible in the moment.

Capacity builds gradually, through small, consistent experiences of listening and responding. Over time, this creates a different relationship with stress, one where responses are not overridden, but supported.

From here, regulation becomes less about effort and more about understanding. Wellness shifts too, not something to add on, but something you learn to listen into. One breath at a time.

For those who feel drawn to explore this more deeply, Tammy Richmond from Mayura Life offers an invitational 6 Week Gentle Nervous System Journey: Sense of Self, an online, real-time experience where these principles are gently brought into practice.

It is a space to learn how to notice, to build a sense of internal safety, to meet activation with compassion, and to discover which tools truly support your system.

Each week unfolds with simplicity, allowing time for integration and reflection, and for you to begin recognising what has shifted within your own body over time. These adaptable tools integrate into daily life, supporting the body in real time, without needing to step away from it.

A quiet place to begin, exactly where you are.
