Inside the 130-Year-Old Marine Supplement Resurfacing in Wellness.

People are drawn to the ocean for reasons that are hard to articulate. The sound of waves, the smell of salt air, the feeling of standing at the edge of something vast and ancient. Cultures across the world build holidays, rituals, and entire ways of life around proximity to the sea. Real estate near the shore commands a premium that’s about more than the view alone.

Some of this is psychology. Some of it is poetry. But part of it, increasingly understood by modern science, is something stranger: a biological recognition.

The Sea we Came From

Life on Earth began in the ocean roughly 3.8 billion years ago. Every organism that has ever existed traces its lineage back to a single-celled ancestor that lived suspended in seawater. As life moved onto land and grew more complex, it didn't leave the sea behind — it brought the sea inside.

The fluids that circulate through the human body today — blood plasma, lymphatic fluid, the extracellular fluid that bathes every cell — bear a remarkable chemical resemblance to seawater. The mineral composition is similar. The salinity is close. The ionic balance is almost identical. This is not metaphor; it is the inheritance of evolution. Human physiology runs on the same chemistry that supported the earliest life forms in the ocean, refined over billions of years but never fundamentally changed.

When people say they feel "restored" by the sea, there is biology beneath the sentiment.

In 1897, a French physiologist named René Quinton became one of the first to study this resemblance in detail. He demonstrated that seawater, harvested correctly and left unprocessed, was so chemically close to mammalian internal fluid that the body recognised it as native. He developed a precise protocol for sourcing raw seawater from plankton-rich blooms at depth, cold-filtering it to preserve its mineral structure, and bottling it without alteration.

Quinton Ultra Pure Liquid Electrolytes have the shortest ingredient list of any supplement in their category: one ingredient. Cold-filtered seawater. Inside each glass ampoule, up to 78 bioavailable minerals and trace elements, in proportions remarkably similar to the fluid surrounding every cell in the human body.

A Useful Comparison

Consider an orange.

A fresh orange contains one ingredient and hundreds of compounds — vitamins, minerals, enzymes, phytonutrients, cofactors — all working together in the form nature assembled them.

A carton of orange juice contains a list of ingredients: concentrate, ascorbic acid, citric acid, natural flavours, calcium hydroxide, potassium citrate, sucralose, colour.

Both might be labelled "orange." Only one is actually an orange.

A similar distinction applies in the supplement aisle. Most hydration and mineral products are assembled — ingredients sourced separately, isolated, recombined, and stabilised. Quinton is not assembled. It is the original mineral matrix, taken from the ocean and delivered substantially unchanged.

Which One to Choose

Quinton is available in two forms.

Isotonic is diluted with spring water to match the natural salinity of human extracellular fluid. Because the mineral concentration matches the body's own, the solution is absorbed effortlessly. It is generally taken before bed, or at any time deep, easy hydration is the goal.

Hypertonic is undiluted full-strength seawater. Its higher mineral concentration is suited to periods of greater demand: in the morning, before exercise, or during sustained physical or mental effort.

Both are packaged in single-serve glass ampoules and consumed directly. Many people use both, depending on the time of day and what their body needs.
